I washed everything and then preheated the oven to 400. I wrapped the potatoes in aluminum foil and threw them in the oven for around 40 minutes.
I then cored my apples, peeled them and cut them into cubes.
I poured the puréed apples into an ice cube tray and popped them in the freezer.
I then scooped out the potato and put it in the blender. I had to add about 1/3 cup of water while blending it to make it smooth. I then poured the potatoes into ice cube trays and put them in the freezer.
So here's the cost break down:
4 apples yielded 16 servings: .28 per serving
4 sweet potatoes yielded 28 servings: .08 per serving
In all it took me about an hour but it would be easy to add a couple more of each, like I said we just want to test the water ;) So I then just popped them out of the trays, put them in gallon freezer bags and put them date on them.
Next I think we will try carrots and maybe peas which I'm just positive she will hate ha-ha
**Bug did try a little of the apple that night and she did really well with it, probably confused on the texture and the spoon, but over all I think she will like starting solids.
It is so cool that you did this! If we ever have another baby I would love to try making our own food.
ReplyDeleteBravo for making your own baby food!
ReplyDeleteSweet potatoes was one of the foods we started with! I rarely picked up baby food and usually just made my own. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! And you make it seem so easy! I think you could add a little chicken broth to the peas and carrots and maybe she'll like it better!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! I will be making carrots next so I will try that, thanks!
DeleteI've always envied moms who have been able to do this! I always used " I just don't have time for it" as an excuse which is horrible. Great job mama!! You make it look easy!
ReplyDeletei love it when moms make their own baby food!! i tried making baby food for my youngest but he never liked it lol!!
ReplyDeleteI was always going to make Aria's baby food! Then we decided to go the baby led weaning route instead, so I still made it, just not purees =) Good for you! Bit more work, way better all around. You might like to check out her 'baby food' tab - http://www.annies-eats.com/2009/02/04/adventures-in-homemade-baby-food-peas/.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I definitely will! Any help I can get at this point :)
DeleteThis is great! I am actually sending this post to my future sister in law who has 2 little babies I think it would be great for her! :)
ReplyDeleteWith my first two I made their food, so easy and so much cheaper! My third one had a difficult start with food, so I was just getting anything down her throat I could, lol! But butternut squash is another great one and if you have a Costco membership, they sell a big bag that's already cut up for a good price!
ReplyDeleteBoo we don't have one anywhere close to us but Ill get some to try with the vegetable groups in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the suggestion :)
DeleteThank you for sharing!! Our first baby is due in March, and I already know that eventually I want to make my own baby food, so this is really helpful! You make it look easy and doable!
